Thailand 2009 is now reality! We finally made it here after months of preparations.
After a smooth trip with Finnair via Helsinki we landed on the new, big Suvarnabhumi airport. It is so big that it took us several hours to find my father (Frank). He had to call out for us in the loudspeakers.
We stayed the first week in Bangkok shopping with good bargains at MBK and with less good bargains at the luxury shopping mall Paragon. We ate a lot of good food and did some sightseeing. We were able to see the Jim Thompson house, which is a house full of thai antiques as well as being an almost century old house in itself. Jim Thompson was a CIA agent from the US, which became a silk merchant and settled in Thailand.
At the end of the week in Bangkok my mother and sister came to visit. We then took the canal boats to see the impressive Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the emerald buddha).
The 17th of January we all flew Bangkok air to Koh Samui. Here we stayed together with my father, mother and sister at the Amari Palm Reef Resort (or Amali Palm Beef Resort as the Thai say). This turned out to be the perfect place for all. There was two pools with childrens part in both, close to the shopping on Chaweng beach and on the beach. The huge breakfast buffé was very nice as well, with everything from sushi to panncakes, exotic fruits and french fries.
During our time at the Amari we looked for a place to stay for the rest of the time, which turned out to be a very good strategy. We got a real estate agent ("Sporty Spice" from Halycon agency) to show us rental homes, when we found the Samui Summit Estate.
We also took the whole family to Koh Nang Yuan island where the snorkling is one of the best. Koh Nang Yuan is three islands linked together by two coral white beaches. It is really beautiful.
When Sigrid, mom and dad left we moved to our villa here at Choeng Mon beach. This beach is smaller and much more quiet than Chaweng, which fits us perfect. The beach is clean and there are some good restaurants. This past week we went to see a "Monkey show" which the kids really liked. The monkeys played quitar, basketball, ate soup with a spoon from a bowl and sold tiger balm to us.
